Laurus Music Specialist Pathway
The Laurus Music Specialist Pathway is designed for exceptionally talented young musicians working at Grade 6–8 standard who aspire to study music at A Level, university or conservatoire.
This advanced pathway is offered as part of A Level Music at Cheadle Hulme Sixth Form. It offers an inspiring programme of high‑level musical training, enrichment and performance opportunities.
Students take part in a broad range of school‑based and external workshops, masterclasses, and concerts. They work closely with our expert team of teachers and benefit from bi‑annual 1:1 lessons delivered by tutors from Manchester’s world‑renowned Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).
Specialist Training with RNCM
Our unique partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) provides students with exceptional access to specialist musical training.
In addition to bi‑annual 1:1 lessons with RNCM tutors, students benefit from:
- Masterclasses led by professional musicians
- Invitations to RNCM concerts, instrument‑specific workshops and specialist study days
- Opportunities to perform in an annual RNCM concert

Music Pathway students receive tailored support as they prepare for auditions, as well as guidance on applying for the Junior RNCM and the RNCM Pathfinder programmes, and the opportunity to attend RNCM Advice Auditions.
What to expect
Students on the Laurus Music Specialist Pathway receive a minimum of 30 minutes of tuition per week on their first study instrument, delivered by our specialist team (if desired).
We also strongly encourage students to learn a second study instrument. For those focusing on a single instrument, piano is recommended as a valuable complementary discipline.
Students are expected to play an active role in our musical community by contributing to instrumental ensembles, orchestras and choirs. They will perform regularly throughout the year in a range of events, including three school concerts and the Trust‑wide celebration, Laurus Live.
A Level Music Course
The Edexcel A Level Music course develops a broad range of academic and practical musical skills and provides a clear progression route towards further study.
Students engage with the following core components:
- Performance
- Composition
- Listening Skills
- Appraising Music
Performance and Composition are assessed through non‑examined assessment (NEA). The Appraising component is examined through a written paper, assessing students’ knowledge and understanding of musical elements, contexts and language explored across the Areas of Study.
