Laurus Music

Musical Instrument Tuition
A Level Music Pathway
Laurus Live
Partnerships

At the Laurus Trust, our mission is simple: to inspire every student and support them in achieving the highest standards of musicianship, regardless of background or circumstance. We are proud to have built a vibrant culture of musical excellence across our schools.

Thanks to the generous support of AL Elevation, we are able to remove barriers and ensure that all students can access exceptional musical opportunities. Every child within the Laurus Trust has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and develop a deep, mature understanding of music through high‑quality teaching and rich musical experiences.

Music Curriculum

Our academic music curriculum is built around four core disciplines: singing, listening, composing, and performing. Through these areas, we develop our students’ powerful knowledge of musical concepts and nurture their creative skills. We provide a broad and diverse range of musical genres, encouraging critical engagement with historical, social, moral, spiritual, and cultural contexts.

Our curriculum extends far beyond examination requirements. It enriches the lives of our students, helping them build deep musical understanding and fostering a lifelong appreciation of music.

By nurturing musical thinking, creativity, and curiosity, our curriculum inspires increasing numbers of students to pursue GCSE and A Level Music, where they achieve outcomes significantly above the national average. With A Level Music now offered at two of our sixth forms, we remain committed to supporting the enthusiasm and ambition of our young musicians.

Co-curricular Music

Across all Laurus Trust secondary schools, thriving instrumental and vocal ensembles create a rich and dynamic musical community.

Our string, woodwind and brass groups form the foundation of our concert bands and orchestras, culminating in the impressive 120‑strong Laurus Trust Symphony Orchestra. We continue to broaden access and inclusion through our expanding steel bands at Didsbury High School, Hazel Grove High School and Laurus Ryecroft, ensuring students from all backgrounds can experience the joy of ensemble music‑making.

Choral music also flourishes across the Trust, with students performing alongside nationally renowned organisations as well as within our own vibrant concert calendar. Our school musical productions maintain a professional standard, showcasing exceptional talent and teamwork.

We are proud to champion the musical excellence of our students. Many progress through graded examinations, earn places at Junior RNCM, secure top university offers, and take part in prestigious programmes including the RNCM Pathfinder Project, Hallé Youth Choir, Hallé Youth Orchestra and Stockport Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Each summer, we host Laurus Live – a spectacular annual celebration of the creativity, dedication, and achievements of our young musicians.
